Contribution from Steven Adelman
The Event Safety Alliance will present several sessions at USITT this year.
On March 14 at the Outdoor Stage, ESA Vice President Steven A. Adelman will discuss severe weather planning and preparedness. ESA will then join a panel of experts discussing engineering and operational issues, including crowd management issues that can arise during emergency egress.
The next day, ESA will join a panel trying to put active shooter incidents in context. Finally, Adelman will introduce how one creates a reasonable emergency action plan.
These sessions address just a few of the myriad issues that event and venue professionals must learn to consider providing reasonable protection to their patrons, artists, and colleagues. Through its own conferences and training materials as well as its participation in programs like USITT, the Event Safety Alliance works to raise industry safety standards and create a culture that puts life and safety first.

Event Safety Alliance Presents: “A Little Rain Never Killed Anyone”
Wednesday, March 14, 2018, 11:30 a.m.
Speaker: Steven Adelman
Outdoor shows are special. In addition to the hazards present at any live event, the organizers of outdoor productions must plan for evacuations, shelter in place, communicate with fleeing patrons, obtain accurate and timely weather information, secure cancellation insurance, implement decision-making systems, and address a myriad of other time-sensitive considerations. Attorney and Event Safety Alliance Vice President Steven A. Adelman will discuss severe weather planning and lead you to a safe harbor in the storm.
“What Could Go Wrong?”: Creating an Emergency Action Plan
Thursday, March 15, 2018, 2:45 p.m.
Speaker: Steven Adelman
To the audience, shows are effortless productions, seamlessly produced by dedicated professionals collaborating closely towards shared objectives. We know otherwise. Because the list of things that can go wrong is limited only by one’s imagination, it is essential to have a robust emergency action plan. In this session, we will discuss what should be included in a reasonable plan, the reasons for those elements, and how one should use their plan during an event. Presented by attorney Steven A. Adelman, Vice President of the Event Safety Alliance.
Situational Awareness, Planning and Process for Active Shooter/Armed Aggressor Scenarios
Thursday, March 15, 2018, 5:30 p.m.
Speakers: Steven Adelman, Dominic Yeager, Jennifer Mason, Douglas Goerke, Maria Bouffard
In the light of several tragic events in our industry over the past few years, it is important that we consider Active Shooter/Armed Aggressor scenarios in our safety and emergency planning. We bring together experts from law enforcement, security management, event safety and theatrical production to discuss these events and offer insight on the threat of an active shooter as related to the role of stage managers, production managers, house managers, technicians, and others in the theatrical world.
